Happy 30th Birthday, Pokemon — Here's What It Means for Card Collectors
By Bradley Cooke
February 27th marked 30 years since Pokemon Red and Green first launched in Japan, and honestly, it still doesn't feel real. My buddy Mike texted me about it and I had one of those "wait, we're that old?" moments. But here we are — three decades of catching 'em all, and the franchise has never been more alive.
For card collectors, this anniversary year is shaping up to be something special. Let me break down what's happening and what you should have on your radar.
The Big One: A Global 30th Anniversary TCG Set
The Pokemon Company announced a dedicated 30th anniversary set dropping in October 2026 — and here's the kicker: it's the first Pokemon TCG set to launch simultaneously worldwide. No more waiting weeks for the Japanese release to trickle over. Everyone gets it at the same time.
The teaser showed off iconic cards spanning the entire history of the TCG, from Base Set Charizard to Crystal Lugia from Aquapolis. New key art features Mew and Mewtwo with what looks like an opalescent sheen, which could mean a brand-new card rarity or mechanic. If the 25th anniversary Celebrations set is any indicator, expect chase cards that reference the greatest hits of the last 30 years — and expect them to be extremely popular.
First Partner Illustration Collection
The First Partner Illustration Collection — Series 1 dropped on March 20th, featuring illustration rare-style promos of the Kanto, Sinnoh, and Alola starter Pokemon. More series covering other regions are planned throughout the year. These are the kind of products that look incredible in a binder and tend to hold their value well since they're limited-run celebration pieces.
Pokemon Day 2026 Collection
If you missed it, the Pokemon Day 2026 Collection came out back in January. It includes a specially stamped foil Pikachu promo, a metallic 30th anniversary coin, and three booster packs. It's a clean little product — great for newer collectors or anyone who wants a piece of the anniversary without going all-in.
LEGO x Pokemon
This one surprised everyone. LEGO and The Pokemon Company partnered up, with the first sets launching on Pokemon Day (February 27th). It's not cards, but the crossover energy is real — LEGO Pokemon sets are already selling fast, and the hype around them is pulling new people into the broader Pokemon collecting world. More eyeballs on Pokemon means more demand for cards. Simple as that.
What This Means for the Market
Anniversary years are historically great for Pokemon card values. The 25th anniversary in 2021 brought a massive wave of new collectors into the hobby, and prices across the board saw a lift. The 30th has even more firepower behind it — a Super Bowl ad, the LEGO partnership, a global TCG set, and year-long product drops.
If you're sitting on sealed Pokemon product, this is a good year to be patient. If you're looking to buy, get in on the anniversary products early. The Pokemon Day Collection and First Partner sets are solid pickups right now, and the October global set is going to be the one everyone's chasing.
